Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling - A Hidden Hainanese Western and Oriental Delights

Wayne Cafe Sri Petaling

In the early 50, they were many Hainanese Chef that can cook very delicious Western dishes. The reason being was most of the Hainanese usually work as Chef which was taught how to cook western dishes by the colonial master. I am one of those that frequent Hainanese Western food in the restaurant like the old Coliseum (Jalan TAR), Le Coq (Ampang) and Yut Kee (Jalan Dang Wangi) among others that I have lost touch with.

With that taste lingering, we had a review at the Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling located 10, Jalan Radin Bagus 6, Sri Petaling, 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia that claimed to serves some of these authentic Hainanese western delights.

Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling

Wayne's is the name of the owners' son and the setup is one of the modern cafe settings that is great for a get-together or family dining.

The owner has gotten Uncle Phua - a retired chef of 77 years old who has over 50 years western culinary experience to assist in Wayne's cafe menu which consists of Uncle Phua signature dish which is the English Style Roast Pork.

Our dinner started off with the order of the Golden Meat Ball (RM18.00). It is a deep fried homemade meatball recipe that has its origin. It is served with the freshly made Hainanese Chilli Sauce (the Hainanese Chicken Rice Chilli Sauce) which are made on a daily basis.

The next appetiser is by the owner family recipe Choon Kuen Spring Roll (RM18.00). This Spring roll is unlike the normal one that uses the popiah skin but instead it uses the pig caul fats. When I was a child, these kind of spring rolls were quite common; nowadays it is very hard to find one that takes quite an effort to make. Eating this spring rolls remind me of those days. This family recipe uses the right amount of ingredient in the filling and is steamed before it is coated with a batter and deep fried to a crunchy, crispy texture.

For the Mains, we had the Uncle Phua Signature Roast Pork (RM25.00). Using Uncle Phua secret recipe is to marinade the Pork Belly and the special treatment of the meat. It is then rolled up and tied like a log and after one day it is then put in the oven with a combination of slow gentle heat to tenderise the meat, plus a shorter blast at a higher heat to crisp up the skin. The end result, you get is a juicy meat while having a crispy skin that married well with the apple sauce.

The next Mains is the Spanish Pork Chop (RM25.00). Compare to other Pork Chop, the meat that is used is the Pork Neck meat, which has a very small amount of fats while its' meat has a very tenderly texture. The Pork chop is grilled to the right char; is served with a slice of grilled apple and served with brown sauce.

Besides serving Western Food, Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling does offer diners a number of oriental selection for you to savour in. Among these are Fried Rice with Roast Pork, or another one of Uncle Phua signature noodle which is the Fried Tung Fun with BitterGourd. But, for today, we tasted the Fried Kwai Fa Mien (RM15.00), this is another one of the dishes from the owners family.

So, what is so special about this Fried Kwai Fa Mien? For one, there are a lot of ingredients that are used to cooked this Yee Mee; which is pork strip, diced prawns, bean sprout, onion, cabbage and most important eggs that are fried together with a special sauce and topped with the strip of lettuce. The Wok Hei was just great as we can smelt the flavourful aroma of the noodle and its ingredients.

To finish off our meal, my partner had the Wayne's Signature Coffee (RM11.00). The coffee beans used at Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling is from Lavazza.

While I had the Affogato (RM11.00) to end my review.

Crab B Restaurant Puchong Jaya 螃蟹哥哥 - Crabalicious Meal With A Twist

Malaysian are very fond of eating crabs, many will travel far and wide in search of the best crab dishes to taste. Recently they have been a raving of special crab dishes in Puchong. We got to try out Crab B Restaurant Puchong Jaya located at 85, Jalan Kenari 20, Bandar Puchong Jaya, 47100 Puchong, Selangor, Malaysia to explore on this.

For folks in another part of town, frets not as there is another outlet in Kepong which is where it all started i.e. Fei Fei Crab Seafood Restaurant Kepong KL. While for folks in Cheras can go to the Crab Generation at Taman Len Sen, Cheras to enjoy more than 12 different type of cooking style for your crabs.

There is no fancy ambience or decor to welcome you to Crab B Restaurant Puchong Jaya just a simple setup but in the evening, you can dine al-fresco outside the restaurant too.

Crab B Restaurant Puchong Jaya has many crab recipe which is concocted by its owner's and here we get to try 2 of his latest creation which the first is the Milky Salted Egg Yolk Butter Crab (set of 2 - RM98.00 for XL size); in Cantonese (Ham Sap Hai) - a very cheeky name if you know your Cantonese well. Loves the taste of the salted eggs and the slight spicy curry taste from the use of the dried chillies and curry leaves . Above all the freshness of the crab was a real deal.

The next one is a more unique which is called the Milo Butter Sauce Crab (set of 2 - RM98.00 for XL size). This has a strong aroma of Milo when it arrives at the table. On tasting, you will be able to taste the sweet Milo with a slight hint of buttery taste which was added to cook this dish. You can also order the special XXXL size crab which is at RM153.00 for 2 crabs.

Our last Crab dish is the Steamed Crab with Eggs (set of 2 - RM98.00 for XL size) - For me this is the best way to enjoy a fresh crab, no sauce, just plain natural sweetness from the crab meat. Simple steamed eggs at the bottom of the dish and topped with sprinkles of Chinese wine to give it a nice aroma and flavour. From the Crab B Restaurant Puchong menu; you can find that they do offer a few other crab species for you to choose from; one notable one is the live French Crab.

Besides serving delicious Crab dishes, Crab B Restaurant Puchong Jaya also offers diners with a la carte seafood dishes that you can order which can go with rice. The first is the Lala Spinach Soup (RM25.00) The Lala is of the meaty version while the additional spinach as a greens' to a seafood gives the broth a strong slightly spicy flavour which goes well with a bowl of rice.

The second dish is the Deep Fried Fish With Special Home Made Sauce (market price and also depends on the type of fish). Here we had a Red Snapper (you can choose to have a Grouper, Senangin or even a Siakap to be cooked in this style) which was deep fried to a crunchy texture on the outside while the inside white meat were firm and matched to the sauce which is made out of chillies padi, dry prawns, fermented bean paste and garlic were another dishes that we savoured with the white rice.

The third seafood dish from the menu is the Thai Tom Yam Crayfish (Hae Go or the Lai Liu Har) (RM20.00). Covered with the Tom Yam flavoured batter and fried to a crisp and served with a dipping sauce.

Next is the Japanese Style Deep Fried Pork Ribs on a Mayo Sesame dressing (RM20.00). We like the taste of the sauce which has a tinge of spicy taste.

The final dish to goes with our rice is the Steam Tofu With Minced Pork and Chillies Sambal Petai (RM15.00). We have eaten many Steam Tofu with Minced Pork, but this dish really takes it to the next level and it was just great eaten with the white rice for those that loves the taste of the Petai.

Crab B Restaurant Puchong Jaya also offers 2 special lunch sets series; the first is the single dish set (RM9.90) with more than 20 selection from rice to noodles. An order of any set will come with a free drinks, ice-cream and soup of the day. The sets that we tried pictured above is the Butter Chicken Rice set.

The other set is called the Love U Bento set which is priced at (RM13.90); comes with a heart shaped rice and vegetables of the day, a portion of scrambled eggs and baked beans. This set also comes with a free drink, ice-cream and soup of the day.

At Crab B Restaurant Puchong Jaya, while you get to enjoy your favourite crab dishes; you can also order the other seafood or dishes for a hearty and satisfying meal.
